The 42029 Pick Up has been one of my favorite designs as soon as i saw it. It’s a rather small kit, only 1060 parts compose it. 3 main functions, a front winch, a tipping bed and a hand of god steering to manipulate the truck, all of them are manual. The instructions integrate a guide that allow you to add a motor and a battery box to the winch and the tipping bed. Those functions are basic and not really playable, the choice of a tiny actuator for the tipping bed won’t allow heavy loads, and the winch is funny… few minutes. Poor functions perhaps, but what a look ! The choice of the red color makes it aggressive and the huge cabin and its impressive guard gives a good impression of power.

What is fun on such a model for me, is to transform it into a fully remote controlled car so it becomes really playable, allowing you to slalom among stack of tires, carry small things or just play like you would with any other remote controlled car, Lego or not. My 7 years old kid kinda shares that opinion with me 🙂

So, no need to argue much, the decision to build it again and to add motors to its chassis was taken in 10 minutes !

My choice went to :
– An XL motor for the propulsion, it has lots of torque and won’t require much gearing down like the other motors would need.
– A servo motor for the steering. First, I checked how much rotation was need to steer the front wheels from center to the sides and the servo motor was offering me exactly what I needed, with the big gain of offering an automatic return to center, which makes the driving much more easy from the remote controller.

chassisFor the building, I took the original instructions and built the model, then, when the chassis was made, I started to examine it from close to find where to add the motors. The main problem was to keep the V6 engine operational whereas it was located very far of the rear axle. I did this by creating a new path between the rear differential and the front of the truck, going just over the 2 motors that I positioned the lower possible, to hide them and keep the original look preserved.

This task asked me to remove lots of pieces and replace them by the needed ones. Once the parts originally needed for the steering removed, most of the job was done and I could finish the entire build.

The end of the assembly was a kid game, since I kept it as close as possible of what it was at its origin, I had no difficulty to finish to build it with the original booklets. The very last modification concerns the roof which now has to support the infra red receiver, settled inside the cabin.

I’m pretty happy of that moc because it’s not distorted by the modifications made, and it’s really playable. My son and I played a full afternoon with it trying to film ourselves to build footage for the Youtube video to come.

A few months ago, I bought a 42000 Formula 1 from Bricklink. It’s a pretty nice model, i like the suspension arms and the way it’s designed. I kept it for the holidays and last week, I built it. It was a rainy week in the west of France, rainy and cold, and I had plenty of time to spare so I decided to disassemble it and to create a new moc from that box.

4After awhile and a good advice from my lady, I chose to create a quad. At first, she wanted a dragster, but it would have required a pair of smaller wheels for the front axle. Choosing to build a quad was a good idea for me, because, like I said earlier, i really, really like those suspension links and quads usually have those kind of levers on their axles.

Here’s the result of 4 periods of 2 to 3 hours of building. The quad has the following functions :

  • Suspended rear axle
  • Suspended front axle
  • Steering axle without rack and pinion, it’s based on a lever linked to the handlebar
  • Openable rear trunk
  • V4 motor located under the driver’s seat

It’s made of roughly 530 pieces, mainly black and white ones, the red ones being left apart because red does not really match to the police colors. To match reality, I did not placed a differential on the rear axle. Technically, it’s a really bad idea because the big flat wheels of the formula 1 won’t allow the quad to turn very well, they stick to the ground and dont slip at all, but at least, it looks real. If you build that quad and wanna play with it, I advise you to be wise and to place a differential on that rear axle, or if you dont want to, just unlink the 2 wheels and to keep only one to drive the fake V4 motor.

Hello all !

MicrolightMy next project is to build a classic aircraft fighter from WWII, a Corsair, a Zero or something like a Messerschmitt. I owned nothing for rotor blades so I bought a 42020 for 9€. This cute little helicopter has 2 tree blades rotors, which is enough for any kind of plane i could build later !

Once in hands, and built, I realized that i could try to transform it into a small MoC and the more interesting idea which popped in my mind was a microlight. So, here it is, it’s a kinda small moc, and for the wings, i’ve had to add a few more extra pieces, taken from the 42039 race car.
It’s not perfect, mainly because i’m unable to create perfect things, my son taken appart, and also because I tried to use only what was available in the 42020 set. The rotor is clearly too big, or the microlight too small, question of point of view.

Maquette F1 v1 - b

The new project is a formula 1, built from scratch. This is more a design exercise than a complex technical attempt. It is one of my first serious tries to build something realistic, humility drove me to avoid the Power Functions and advanced functions at start, the next model will probably radio commanded at least.

I started by a beam-made profile, the idea was to see what scale and what wheels to choose. After, i built a first front wing, but it was not robust enough, the second is the one you see in the pictures from the gallery. This is the one I’ve kept for the project.

Second step, a body. The front wing gave me a good start to build a body aligned with its top. I made the body with red pieces. Then, i went back to LDD and rebuilt it. This is, imho, a good way to correct a few things, those you dont want to change because you have to remove 30 pieces just to change a small pin somewhere 🙂

After that, I grabbed my box of panels and started to play with them, trying to find a good configuration, then, I finished the model with LDD. This is what you can see in the gallery, the first complete picture of the Formula 1, fully red.

Finally, I went back to the lego boxes and built the model again, following the LDD instructions, and with the colors i had, a nice meli-melo of yellow, red and black, hehe. The design worked well enough for me. A quick jump to bricklink to buy the missing red beams, a quick delivery (thank you Champagne Brickstore !) and here’s the full model, in red and black ! I wont add stickers, i dont like them to much and I’m not sure the model is pretty enough to deserve them ! Next time perhaps 🙂

Building time so far : 4 hours with Lego, 5 hours with LDD, 3 hours of building and unbuilding and building again ! 🙂

EasyBatteryBoxI was working on an idea to add an easy to replace battery box to my models. The problem is to lock it so whatever happens to the model, the battery does not fall nor can move. The other point of the conception is to keep it easy to replace, without any studs nor hard to manipulate montages. I made the choice to use a lock held by a rubber band and two rails on each side of the battery.
